"In 1973 Gorecki encountered a short prayer found on the wall of Cell No 3 in the Gestapo Headquarters (known as 'The Palace') in Zakopane. It had been written by Helena Wanda Blazusiakewna, an 18-year old girl imprisoned in September 1944. The writer begs the Virgin Mary not to desert her in her hour of need. This text forms the famous second movement and is the passage that is most often heard".
